Are You Too Emotional?

In the quagmire of emotions, I often found myself trying to find the balance that is considered right and acceptable. The do's and don’ts used to always float inside my head. Did that ever happen to you?

• Don’t cry too much. You’ll come across as unstable and weak.
• Woman, you never cry. You come across so cold.
• Woman, you feel too much. You have to stop wearing your heart on your sleeve.
• Let him do all of the work. Don’t show so much love.
• You’re too sensitive. You need to become (fill in the blank).

All those outside voices required an apology and acknowledgement of what I needed to be or become.

But eventually I had to step back and look at me, emotional me, and I had to quiet out all the other voices. When I did, I began to realize that there was a season for all sorts of emotions. It came with the life happens that occur from time to time, like the stress of being a mom with young children; the pain of losing someone dear; the regret of wrong choices; the anxiety of too many changes occurring simultaneously; the risk of diving into the unknown; the betrayal of a friend; the burden of holding on or letting go; or the challenge of starting over (to name a few).

Emotional me discovered that tears were not necessarily a sign of weakness but often a display of love, happiness and yes hurt and pain. But to feel meant I was alive and not dead to my senses. It meant I was living and not existing. It meant that I recognized there were areas to heal and that acknowledgement is the first step towards it.

Emotional me recognizes that at times the feelings of the blues is my body telling me to slow down or stop so that I can nurture the inner girl. It forced me to seek and uncover where I lack. Perhaps I’m working too many hours, facing a hurtful situation, not treating the body right or having a hormone shift and in dire need of chocolate.

Emotional me assures me that whatever pain that afflicts me is temporary. She reminds of times past and urges me to find a friend when the cloud of blues lingers on a bit too long.

Emotional me coax me to apologize after an irritable moment and encourages me to choose future dialog that will build instead of tear down (internally and externally).

Emotional me is the chick that tricks me many times into believing I should dress beautifully and escorts me happily into the shoe store to buy pair number 75. Ah yes she reminds me to buy or give hubs a little something so that he doesn’t freak out on the latest purchase.

Emotional me, emotional you… Too often we chuck valid emotions as being too emotional. We beat ourselves up, drive ourselves crazy and sometimes become more emotional because of it. We feel we’re not allowed, so we become more depressed and become more emotional and it becomes a vicious cycle.

To acknowledge emotional you is to embrace the essence of who you are as a woman. It doesn’t provide an excuse to reign as a woman gone wild but offers the acceptance that you love deeper; you’re wired to nurture, are built with a 6th sense intuition and have tear ducts that activate at a drop of a hat.

When you understand that about yourself, you begin to learn, as with everything else in life, that there’s a need for balance. Don’t ignore, belittle, or get exasperated with emotional you. Find out what she’s trying to tell you…LISTEN.

You're My Girl

Some times, I have the privilege to come along side one of the gals and become their cheer leader within part of their journey. The other day, one of my grasshoppers called and shared a story that warmed my heart. Like many others during this time, she experienced incredible economic hardship. I have to admit that there were times that I was at a loss for words and I even questioned God and asked why He couldn’t move faster. That probably sounds a bit daring on my part, but if you have relationship, real relationship, you understand that it is not done out of disrespect – frustration perhaps but never disrespect.

What is it that puts you in that place where you can question but trust God at the same time? It’s relationship…not surfacey relationship…not rescue me…but the real deep I can’t live without you type of deal. It’s when you get to the place of - Even if it gets real bad, it’s gonna be okay as long as you’re with me. That’s Mia. There were times where things were ugly and she would always come back after one of her rants and say but I trust God…it will work together for good. And I would reply many times, I can’t wait until the day you give me the good news of the miracle that God has done in your life. I would take it further and assure her that one day I would…and I did.

When I heard the excited voice on the other line, I knew. I had a smile probably as big as Mia’s on my face. She recanted about her interviews but what caught my attention were three little words. It just echoed in my soul. Before she entered into her second round of interviews where she was going to be bombarded with tough questions by six executives, Mia had taken ill. She pleaded and was desperate to hear from God. Right before going in, she heard His voice clearly. “Let’s go in there and show them what a blessing you are to them. You’re my girl.” Immediately she felt peace and her spasms subsided.

What is it that moves the heart of God to say “You’re my girl?” I think it’s the same thing that moved Him when he said “This is my son with whom I am well pleased."

Many of us feel that God can’t think of us in that way because we measure ourselves against our faults instead of His grace. But when you have relationship – true relationship – you can’t help but feel God smile upon you. You feel it each morning as you greet the creator of the universe. You feel it during the day through others. You feel it when you live your purpose daily. You can’t help but feel it as you say goodnight, grateful for another day.

“You’re my girl” reverberated in my soul. It reminds me that each day He celebrates me, even when I’m unaware. It reminds me that even when there is no rhyme or reason, when life sucks and things don’t go my way, I’m His girl. He didn’t say atta-girl or that’s-a-girl like some of my friends do. He made it very personal and said “You’re ‘my’ girl."

I love intangible gifts. They seem to stay with you forever. This reminder is one of the best of them and the greatest gift for me is that I got to write about it. =)

Disregard of the Most Important Girl

Did you know that the most important girl in your world is you? Yet, you disregard her constantly. Don't worry you're in great company. You and I are in that same boat.

If you're a mom, you put your kids first. If you're a wife or have a significant other, you put them first. If you have anyone that you take care of, you often put them first. For some reason we constantly put others ahead of ourselves.

Why do we do that?

We are nurturers and many of us are people pleasers...and yes I included me! I do have to say that I am getting better with trying not to please everyone because it's an impossible, up-mountain battle. You can never please everyone. Someone will always complain or murmur or point out what you didn't do for them. Soooo...

What about you?

We can be are our own worst enemies because of disregard. We disregard our appointments, our health, our wardrobe, our looks and we disregard our spirit gal. We go by the mantra of "I  am woman, hear me roar" but inside, we really sound like that whirly-pissed off cat who is annoyed with everyone, including ourselves. We can't seem to get it together because in our minds, we're supposed to "be all" and "do all."

It's a lie...a myth that many have bought into. You and I can't be all and do all, and the person who pays for it is...you guessed it is YOU. The disregard happens subtlety and over time and you get used to it. You gauge progress by what you've done and who you are to those important to you, but that gauge does not include you...the most important girl. By now you're probably asking...

How do I fix this?

Do not disregard you. Make an appointment for yourself in that busy schedule of yours and make it a habit to keep it. Keep up with your check ups. Make time for the bubble baths or (semi) long hot showers. Make sure you learn how to slap on a decent make up face in record time. Schedule time with girlfriends for coffee, movies, dinner or shopping, but most urgently needed, schedule time with Papa God. Talk to Him throughout your day and remember your faithful companion, Holy Spirit.

You're probably shaking your head and saying that's a lot. Honestly, is it?

We make time and priority for a mile-long list of things that are important to us or that need to be done. Here's a reality check. The care of you is part of the needs to be done. Don't disregard the most important girl in the world. Don't disregard you. Love you first, then all other things by default will fall into its rightful place.

Your Healing Reality

You won't hear anyone admit that a situation is hopeless unless it's really bad, but did you know that you could feel hopeless about something and not share it? You can feel hopeless about a child that does not receive correction. You can feel hopeless about financial messes that don't seem to end. You can feel hopeless about a significant relationship that is not giving you what you expect or deserve.

To live in hopelessness in one area, often spills over into other areas of our lives. It shows by how we respond or by how we live...as if there's a dark, stormy cloud circling over.

How do you move from hopelessness and into positive expectation?

It's all about mindset and what you will continue to accept as your negative or positive norm. You see hope will always spring up in your heart. It's up to you not to stop it from welling up until it overwhelms you. Sometimes guilt can creep up because you feel like you shouldn't entertain the feelings of hope, but did you know that those rays of sunshine are there to heal?

When you experience those rays within the crevices of your heart, it's your opportunity to widen the crevice so that more sunshine can pour through.

Often people are stuck because they don't put into practice the words that are on the pages of the bible. It's not enough to read, to recite, to claim or declare. You have to put into practice what is written. It's not based on feelings. It's based on knowing that God is a good God, and if so, He will make things better. Everything has an expiration date. Everything. Thank God for time.

It is my prayer that you have caught a glimpse of hope and that it replays in your mind over and over again until it becomes your healing-reality.

Goodbye Restlessness!

Look at your life. Is there a pattern of restlessness that you live with? I think that we are all guilty of that. Day after day, productivity is measured by what you do, but are you accomplishing anything, and most importantly, are you resting?

Restlessness is the constant go.When you're not doing, you feel useless, bored, fidgety and anxious. You do not know how to relax unless you're on vacation, and perhaps for you, even in a beach environment, you do not know how to shut it off. The brain and the body is wired for stimulation and the constant "do" or "go."

How do you step out of restlessness?

First you have to get to the crux of the why you need to keep going. Does your "do" give you validation, value or self-worth? Does the fruit of your constant-toil give you great rewards? Are you seeing incredible results and that's your motivation? Or does the silence haunt you with all sorts of accusations and questions? Does guilt drive you to drown out the unanswered questions? Is boredom the constant knock on the other side of your quiet moments? Do you get anxious because you can't accomplish everything on your list? Are you a perfectionist because having control keeps order in your mind? Have you asked yourself the truth behind the why you live in the restlessness that you have created?

That last question bothered me too. but any situation that is contrary to the word of God, we have created. It was not circumstances or situations. It was our response and reaction. The word of God tells us that we are to trade our yoke to His because it's lighter, and that we should enter into His rest. If that is the case, then restlessness is the place where we believe that we need to have all under control, even our quiet time. That sounds like we don't need God. (ouch)

Did you know that your quiet time is the greatest opportunity for intimacy not only with God but with those you love the most. Your mind is quiet, your attention becomes laser-focused and you have the ability to give of yourself in intensity because there are no distractions. Rich and I decided not to put a TV on the main floor of the house so that we could encourage more uninterrupted conversation with our family. They complain sometimes that we should have a TV in at least the living room, but they have also realized that not having one slows us down and keeps us focused when talking to each other.

Slowing down is an art that takes practice over and over again. You have to intentionally choose to slow it down and shut it down. When restlessness creeps in, because it will, you need to choose not to entertain it and reassure yourself that you're doing the right thing. This is not an overnight change. It's a change you have to choose again and again on your day, hours or moments of rest...and yes you can do it.

Goodbye restlessness!

Suicidal Thoughts

One would never think that simple words can be powerful. They can actually start a downward spiral unbeknownst to you. Did you know that the words that you say, create your environment? Seriously...they do.

Every negative or positive, creates what you see within your realm of influence. Tell your child they're bad long enough, and they will believe it. Tell them that they can do anything they pour their hearts into, and they will. Tell yourself that you're unlovable and you will attract significant others (yes plural) that can't love you enough. Tell yourself that you're fat and unattractive, and you will start dressing frumpy and sloppy and not care about your appearance. These repetitive thought-filled behaviors are enforced again and again, by you. It doesn't matter if it started by someone outside of you. It is your words that give whatever was said power.

What does this have to do with suicidal thoughts? Everything!

How many times have you said under your breath or in your thoughts, out of frustration, despair or even jokingly, "I can't do this anymore; I want to die; I don't want to live anymore; or I would've died?" All of those words lay down a thought-path that can be extended with additional thoughts and words.

Your reactions are not surprises. They are subconscious thoughts intertwined with behaviors that manifest because, you guessed it by now, you said it over and over again, perhaps over years and they began to take root and grow. Suicidal thoughts don't just happen overnight. They build off of constant disappointment, unshakable depression, rejection bombardment, the list can go on and on. When the pressure is too much to handle, the thoughts can gravitate towards the feelings of worthlessness and not being missed.

The reality is that you will be missed, and you're worth more than you can ever imagine. You are valuable beyond anything priceless on this earth, so much so that God sent Jesus for you. Perhaps those words mean nothing to you, but think back, just for a moment of the heartache of losing someone you loved. That is how God feels about you everyday when you're not with Him. The only way to get you back (your heart back) was to send Jesus for you. If you were the only person on this planet, He would do it again and anyway.

Suicidal thought can be captured by love. When you get preoccupied by the love thoughts like you are loved, you are valued, your worth has no earthly price-tag, and those who love you want you here - your presence as a present, it begins to shut down the suicidal thoughts. You are a gift to others and the fact that you're reading this is the reminder that you are so loved beyond what you can imagine.

P.S. There's a simple prayer to get your heart connected with Father God. You can pray it with me. Let me know if you did!

Father God, forgive me of my sins. Come into my heart and be the Lord of my life. In Jesus Name.

There is Greatness in You

There is greatness in all of us, but it requires us to tap into the source. God has given us all...in each of us...the ability to do and to do in greatness. What you decide, determines the size of your greatness. If you do small, your greatness will be in the small. If you decide to go full force, your greatness will follow.

Choose Greatness
It is in the choice where greatness shines. So if that is the case, then the celebration of becoming should be ever-constant, ever-evolving and ever-present. You may ask, why evolving? It's because celebrations are not all the same. How boring and predictable would that be? We celebrate in different ways and for different reasons. Take for instance your birthday. The greatness, the significance of your day is celebrated, so is the greatness of you, your love and your presence. It's a celebration of you at that moment in time. With age, your celebrations evolve, change in order to make your greatness known and shared.

You are great and you have greatness within you. It's not based on a feeling but you can be blinded by a lie someone created of you,
and that you have created for yourself.

The shine of your greatness will always break through the darkness and will help you get glimpses enticing you to live the truth - your truth - the design within you deposited by Almighty God. That greatness within you is something that no one can take away. No one but you can relinquish this gift because of doubt, unbelief or self-loathing. The last one is hard to hear, but it's one of the main reasons why people give up their greatness. They get tired and dislike who they are. Is that you?

Self-love...self-love is an important ingredient. (Yes, I repeated it twice for emphasis.) How do you practice this? How do you love you and ensure that you continually live in your greatness?

Find out as we dive into the journey of Love32.

What is a Sofon?

"He's a sofon Julie!" she screamed in frustration. "What?" Anna replied. "A sofon! You know like those big garbage cans in the projects that are filled with newspapers to burn for heat."

Anna stared at her with a perplexed look on her face. "Anna, he's like that garbage can." Anna's brows began to knit together as she frowned. Her lips began to form a pout.

"Don't look at me like that. You know it's true. As long as you feed into him, give him what he wants, he will burn for you and give you the affection you need. But, the minute you stop, he's like a sofon. If you don't keep lighting it up, eventually it will die out. And in case it's not obvious to you, a sofon always contains it's flame to one place. Girl you want a man whose a forest fire! You want him loose...to go everywhere...unconstrained. That's what true love is like. The man that loves you wants to be part of your family. He wants to meet your friends and most importantly, he loves you and looks for you!"

Anna's anger grew with every word coming out of Julie's mouth. She spat vehemently, "You don't understand. He pays attention to me unlike Eric who never used to. You don't know what you're talking about! You don't know what it's like to have someone who finally cares and pays attention to me!"

Julie thought for a moment and chose her words carefully, "But at what cost Anna?"

Perhaps you know someone like Anna or perhaps you were Anna. You were in a relationship where you were mistreated, you switched over into a new relationship and found yourself on the unbalanced side of giving, and giving and giving...again.

Women, as nurturers, tend to naturally lean towards being all her man wants her to be. However, when the cost compromises her emotionally, socially and spiritually, she often misses her flag, her warning that she may be in a sofon relationship. The relationship is contained and remains within a happy balance as long as she's giving certain things, his way, most of the time.

Why do women get caught up into an emotional sofon? Find out more next week.

Overlooked Series: Introduction

Overlooked…have you ever felt that way? You know, like when somebody didn’t notice something you did...like how you changed your hair, are dressed up to the nines or perhaps how much you do. Often we equate that to rejection. We feel rejected. We feel neglected. Worst of all, we feel forgotten.

When something you put effort into is not recognized, it can put you into a tailspin of doubt. You begin to question why the person or persons didn’t notice. You begin to wonder if what you did was not good enough. You begin to wonder if your abilities are good enough. The comparison game kicks in and you start to tally what you don’t have because you’re focused on someone else’s noticeable, good points. You come to the conclusion that you’ve fallen short. The cycle begins.

Women are often overlooked but those who were in authority over them growing up. They are overlooked by the busy father who didn’t take out time to do daddy/daughter dates and tell them that they’re beautiful.

Some didn’t see the right treatment of their mother because their father’s focus was more on making money. No matter how hard their mom tried, their father didn’t notice or didn’t acknowledge the mom’s efforts or when she got dolled up for him. They young girl believes this to be the norm, so they bring it into adulthood only to find that the sting of being overlooked hurt more than they anticipated or thought they were accustomed to.

As a young child enters into her pre-teens and teens, there is a need of validations and affirmations from her main, male figures. She begins to notice that there is a pattern of being overlooked by teachers, peers called friends and even siblings. At times, she wasn’t picked to go certain places, play certain games or participate in certain events. She was left out, either intentionally or because nobody noticed she wanted to be part of the group. No one knew that she wanted so badly to fit in but she felt the deep ripple effects of it. Inside she believed that she did not add value and with that, she began to create a barrier, a mechanism that would protect her from feeling rejected…all because she was overlooked.

Unbeknownst to her main, adult-authorities, a chasm began to form in the innermost part of her being. Her soul began to disengage but the hunger to connect and be significant began to grow. Thus the need for outside validation began to grow. Her value began to chip away as the cycle and pattern continued to intensify through boyfriends and bad break ups. (Sometimes I wonder why we call it bad break ups. I’ve never seen a good one.) The boyfriend didn’t notice how pretty she looked after she spent so much time doing her hair or make up. He didn’t notice what she wore unless it was low cut or short. A new unhealthy correlation begins to emerge. She begins to equate attention with how she dresses. Although at first it annoys her, the attention she gets is intoxicating because she never received it from her authoritative male figure during her childhood years. And so the cycle continues to increase, chasm begins to deepen and her sense of value begins to erode.

There are three areas in a woman’s life where the absence of validation and affirmation causes a domino effect. These three areas are emotional, social and spiritual. You may wonder why I didn’t mention the physical. The physical usually displays the scars that are visible to her and others. They show up in depression, weight gain, promiscuity, self-loathing…the list is long. The inner scars are invisible to the outside and often not recognized by the overlooked woman. She believes she is living the norm, when in reality her actions, her lifestyle, what she expects and gives are being driven by the unseen to others, as well as to herself.

For the next few weeks, I will be unpacking this via my blog posts. I hope you join me in this journey of reversing the cycle of bondage that being overlooked may have created in your life. It’s time to be free.

Your Heart Motivation

What is the motivation of your heart, at this moment…right now? You know, the deep emotions that help you make choices.

A woman’s emotions are the driving factor for many of her decisions. Unlike our male counterpart, many of us have not mastered the logical side of decision making. I have to say, it is one of the many things we do become aware of, and we adapt to as we get older. That’s the good news! But, what should be done in the meantime?

1. Pray. Run everything by God. He will reel you in when the tears and the raging hormones
want to throw you into a fit of panic or sheer witchiness. (By the way, neither are Godly.)

      2. Bounce your emotions against a girlfriend that is more balanced than you, and will tell you the
truth. (You don’t need a “Yes girl, I know what you’re going through” gal, at this moment.)

     3.  Ask yourself, is what I’m experiencing and feeling right now, influence me to make the right
decision without regrets in the future?

What does all of this have to do with the motivation of your heart? Everything.

A woman, who is cynical, will look at life through the eyes of sarcasm. Her mannerism and responses will always be like a hot, scalding iron.

A woman, who is a people pleaser, will look at life as the constant obligation to say yes and be liked. Her life is filled with insecurity, and she is the shadow of her real self.

A woman, who has been or is being abused, will look at life with fear and will ensure that she protects herself in ways that keep her imprisoned. Her life is filled with excuses and blame.

A woman, who lacks confidence, will look at life as an impossible journey filled with pitfalls and distractions. Her life is lived with caution and dismay. Unfortunately, life continues to pass her by.

Perhaps, you do not relate to any of these women, but I bet you are guilty of having the wrong motivation at one time or another. You have said something you really did not mean. You made a decision that was wrong, because your heart motivation lead you down the wrong path. You lied to someone, or screamed at them, or did something to hurt them, because the thought of getting even was alluringly sweet at the moment.

The motivation of the heart, your heart, has a tendency of being your guide. The bible says that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. Therefore, given that fact, the motivation of your heart also causes you to speak words that may hurt you and others, as well as bless yourself and others.

There are times that a heart inventory is in order, but it cannot be done unless the inventory includes the motivation of each of your thoughts and actions behind it. What is the motivation of your heart this moment? What are you contemplating or dwelling on?

Perhaps it’s time for you to take inventory and pray.

It’s in those quiet moments, when we ask God to keep us holy, that we find where our true motivations lie.

Watch Your Conduct

One day a friend of mine called and began to share the hardships that she was having with her husband. Before I could catch myself, (my mouth sometimes gets ahead of me), I told her, you need to watch your conduct.

Needless to say, she got very quiet on the other end and I began to tell her the reasons why. It’s been a while since that conversation. Things have changed in her household, not only with her husband but with her children as well. She watches her conduct.

The way you act, the way you respond to those around you, creates, establishes and maintains your environment. Women set the tone of the home. If that is true, a home that is not a safe and/or peaceful haven has a tendency to point to you, the woman. Before you disagree, I am well aware that a woman responds to her man. However, when a man is incapable to give you want God expects of Him, you have to make a choice. Will you let him dictate your moods or will you rise above and be the God gal that you’re supposed to be.

Your conduct, how you act and respond is not to those around you but to Him above you. Your conduct should align vertically. If God will frown upon it, you shouldn’t do it. Unconditional love takes work. It doesn’t come naturally.  Unconditional love forces you to look at you first and see your shortcomings. We are so ready to point fingers and list grievances, but fail to look within.

Weigh your words. Weigh your responses. Be conscientious of the faces you make, the muttering under your breath,  the sighs, ughs and gggrrrrrsss. Your conduct reflects Christ. If you want your home, your relationships and your environment to be ideal, look within. Nobody dictates your mood but you.

Easier said than done…absolutely, but not impossible.

Down with Holiday Stress!

The holidays can be a very stressful time for many. It's because of the whirlwind of decorations and entertainment that come along with it. The pressure of what to buy adds to what is already a harried month. I admire a friend who opts out of buying gifts for family and instead cares for others in that space. She donates her resources both in time and money, and instead chooses to receive the intangible gift that comes from giving to a complete stranger in need.

Look around you for a moment. Perhaps you're reading this in the comfort of your home or your job. Both are a blessed place even if it's not the ideal place you had in mind. When you begin to look at life from that perspective, the appreciation levels rise and so does your happiness. Discontentment grows from lack of appreciation for what is yours, right now. Arriving does not mean the accumulation of stuff. Reality is that you will never arrive. The wonderful thing about life is that it is a constant journey that brings new adventures and adversities.

I had the privilege one time of sitting in a workshop that was about adversities and walked away with a new perspective. (Self-education is such a good and necessary thing.) I have a habit of bringing God into my stuff, so of course it became the topic of conversation. My aha moment was when I realized that adversity, big or small, can be a propelling point and opportunity, and not just something that is negative.

Here is what clicked in the brain. Adversity pushes you into opportunity. There is always a solution. It may not be one you like, but when you push through, it gets you to a better place.

So how does this apply to holiday stress? Stress is an adversity. Find a solution not just to lower it, eliminate it. This will require effort and nobody likes effort. As a matter of fact, no one likes a lot of effort. We have become a 'let's make it easy and convenient' society and have created lots of lazy people who are frustrated, unfulfilled and living a sub-standard life instead of extraordinary.

Are you willing to invest in you to make a better place within your circle of influence? It's easy to walk away or ignore. I say let's be different and make a positive, ripple-effect in our world.

Watch out stress - you are going down! Well...at least we're going to give it our best effort.

Hint: If you plan carefully, you can eliminate the holidays stress and blues! If you didn’t do enough planning this year – lesson learned – start earlier, lots earlier, next year

Fear is a Liar!

Fear can take many shapes and forms.
For example, it may look like a guardian who protects your heart when it actually shuts you in and everyone else out.
Fear will lie to you every time. It will state that you have an iron heart when in reality it has numbed you to all possibilities, both towards your present and future.
Fear will manifest through defensive attitude. It will hide the real reason for your sadness, anger, resentment, bitterness, loneliness, etc.
Unlike the good fear, hurtful and false fear leaves no room for reason nor will it allow you to be sensitive.
The beauty of sensitivity is that it forces you to feel. A soul-ache is an indication that something is out of sync and needs to be fixed. You can’t heal if you refuse to feel.

Lady Insecurity

I like to imagine that Insecurity is a woman. Once she has a hold of you, she clings on to you for dear life, almost like a lover. Oh and be careful if you cross her--her grip will become vengeful. She’ll make sure she’ll keep you in your place by instilling fear that is fueled with doubt, or lack of love and trust. It will show in your posture since she’ll make sure you lack the self-confidence and acceptance that you need in order to succeed.
Lady Insecurity will make sure you hide your uncertainties by keeping people at a safe distance. She wouldn’t want any of them to get too close to you. People may find out about your instability and try to help you. Oh but wait. She has that covered too. You see, she’ll also make sure that she stunts your personal growth by whispering that you’re okay just the way you are. Her motto is, “Have problems? Don’t face them.” This will resound in your head like a lullaby. She’ll love you forever and be your faithful friend as long as she’s the Boss. Wouldn’t you agree that it may be time to fire her?

Got Natas?

Spanish coffee lovers usually do not tolerate natas. Our coffees are not lattes. They resemble an espresso but have a distinct flavor, aroma and taste. The boiled (not steamed) milk is a big contributor. If you serve coffee with natas, most Hispanics will get disgruntled and if they happen to be family members, they will immediately return their cup and ask for another.

Nata is the thick film that floats to the top after you have boiled milk. If you’re like me, you find it to be nasty and remove it quickly before you pour the milk into your coffee.

As I boiled milk this morning for my coffee, I thought about all of the natas that God wants us to scoop out of our lives.
Natas - the junk that floats up during a hot situation.

Natas - the stuff we don’t recognize, don’t want to look at, don’t care to admit, hide, dress up, are proud of, get fueled by, use as a protection, use as an excuse, believe, accept and live with.

So what are some of life’s natas?
  •  The pin of hate that is worn as a badge of honor.
  • Angry thoughts and/or feelings that linger forever and have no expiration date.
  • Being sensitive towards certain things when we should’ve gotten over it already.
  • Carrying the torch for someone who has left ions ago and was not worth it.
  • The green shade of jealousy that has taken hold of our wardrobe.
  • The common ache from the disease called Comparison Syndrome.
  • The Ghost of Insecurity that hangs around like a faithful companion.
  • The common middle name….Procrastination.
  • When no choice has become our excuse.
  • When we still hear the computer sound wave – “unworthy, unworthy” as we look in the mirror.
  • The lost of control that shows in our gut and hips.
  • Keeping friends who influence us negatively.
  • Beating ourselves up when God doesn’t know what we’re talking about.
  • When being critical has made us age.
  • Being an attention junkie and unable to kick the habit.
  • When we live to please and please and please.
  • When control freaks bow down and worship us.
  • Respect is only displayed when coerced.
  • Self-esteem needs to be scraped off of our shoes from time to time.
  • Love is only about what we get.
  • No is not part of our vocabulary.
  • The fear of … (fill in the blank).
Now there are those who don’t mind the natas. Some will push it to the side. Others will actually drink it. So what happens when we do that with life’s natas? When we push something to the side, it never gets corrected. When we drink it, have accepted it as part of our lives, it never gets addressed.

Junk that float up the top is an indicator that there is something harmful that is holding us back. We have the option to push it to the side, continue to drink or scoop it out completely. There’s always a choice when it comes to the quality of our lives.

It takes courage to continuously change and want change. I hope that each time you look at your coffee, you’re reminded of the pleasantries of life and how removing the natas can make your cup that much better.

Oh hail to coffee without natas and life without the same!

Nuggets of Learnings

Birthdays, anniversaries and New Years always make you take inventory and reflect on what you've accomplished, where you're at and what's next. I am grateful for the milestones because it welcomes the opportunity for change and growth. Some people groan during those key moments and miss out on the chance to dig in deep and answer the tough questions about themselves. It's also a time of sharing with others what you've learned along the way.

I have two incredible daughters and like any other parent, I'd rather they learn from my stories than for them to experience certain mistakes or heartaches. I wish they would listen to council and do what is right when no one is looking over their shoulder. Most of all, I pray that they would keep Jesus as the center of their lives, because no matter what, they will always find balance in life because their faith will sustain them.

There are a lot of things I want to share with them about what I've learned over the years but there isn't enough time, enough attention (on their part), enough wisdom (I'm just mom) or enough of their presence (I have to share them with others). The wonderful thing about writing is that love on paper always captures the attention of a person, so with a heart that is overflowing, here are my nuggets of learning for my daughters, Kristen and Lindsey.

Love is a constant that goes beyond the butterflies within the tummy. It's reinforced and displayed in the little routine, mundane, everyday stuff that is taken for granted because we get hung up on the stupid, small, negative-stuff that's not worth asphyxiating over.

Live fully but choose carefully. If your initial gut tells you it's wrong than it's wrong. A numb conscience is your worst enemy because it means that you've disciplined a bad habit of not letting your spiritual side lead the way. You will always lose if you do that.

Be an advocate of only the things that really make you heated. Don't be an advocate for all. You will come across as a people pleaser. It is okay to have your own opinion even if it means someone won't like you.

Maintaining neutrality should be used only in certain cases when it's called for like within a job, a school or a relationship but it should not be a way of life. A neutral person loses their voice, their persona and their shine. You were meant to be different.

Your opinion is not the end all. Don't shut people down with your beliefs or talk over them in conversations. Become a good listener. Often times we don't hear a person's heart because we're busy responding in our heads when they're talking.

If someone dismisses your faith, don't waste your time defending your beliefs. State what you believe unapologetically and move on.

Quiet time is precious. Monopolize it when you can because the seasons of life can diminish that pretty quickly. Learn to be content with just you and yourself.

Friendships are like a dollar in your pocket my dad would say. Still trying to figure that one out but here's what I think. Dollars come and go. The value of a dollar goes up and down. A dollar can buy you something or nothing. A dollar can be invaluable or valuable depending how much you need it.

Your parents may not always be right but they will always have your best interest at heart. When all others fail you, at the end of the day, you will always be their child (my child) and there is safety and love in the comfort of family. Don't ever forget family.

Love deeply. I emphasize on love twice because it's the reason for your existence. Love your God with all your heart. Love others despite their flaws. You have flaws too. Love your life. You get only one chance to live it so live it well. Give love, accept love and teach others to love through your actions. Don't plant seeds of hate. It's a waste of time.

Forgive. We are all chronically human (as pastor says). None of us are above making mistakes even ones done on purpose.

Don't assume. It will get you in trouble. Assumptions create rifts because it opens the doors for wrong interpretation or an opinion that is yours alone...not the reality…torturous place to be.

The blues is temporary and the choice to remain sad and depressed is yours. Never, ever stay in that part of your mental country for long. Short visits only.

Feel. You're a woman and your emotions are right where they should be - deep. It's okay to cry and be emotional. I'm not justifying permanent PMS mode.

I'm digging peace. I hope you diligently search for it and make it a constant in your life. Stress shortens life. We see it every day. Winning arguments may feel good but does the end result establish peace? Some things are not worth the energy. Pick your battles.

Keep your value. Don't lower your standards for no one. Compromise when it comes to your value will scar you. Your value far exceeds that of a diamond in your parent's eyes...in my eyes. You're worth much more than my life. I would trade it for yours without thought.

Know that you are loved. I know that this is the third time I've mentioned love but bear with me, I promise this will be my last tidbit. I mention it once again because life begins with love and then continues into eternity. You are never - not loved. Always remember that.

I Trust You...You Trust Me

I trust you, you trust me, we're a perfect family. ðŸŽµðŸŽ¶ðŸŽ¼ðŸŽµðŸŽ¶
Remember the Barney song...I love you, you love me? I bet that song will be playing over and over again in your head today. (I can hear some of you now...thanks a lot Roz!
There has to be love to establish trust. God's love comes from a well that is so deep, you can't see the bottom. You can take and take and take and He will never, ever say you're taking too much.
Trust comes with love and love comes from continual and consistent relationship. There's no way around it. The deeper the trust, the deeper the love. The deeper the love, the deeper the relationship.
Where does your trust reside and is it sustainable and for you at all times? Only you can take inventory. Be brutally honest. If your trust anchor doesn't keep you grounded, you may want to consider a change.

The Gift of Remembrance

To remember is a gift. It doesn't matter whether it was good or bad. There are painful memories that have shaped you or given others hope when shared.
Where does your mind dwell? Where does it gravitate to, day after day? The gift to remember is the most abused time portal used. Its misuse has caused people to wish for what they can't have, be stuck in an abused yesterday that will never happen again or stay sad because of what no longer is.
Life, the preciousness of life, is in the now, keeping in mind that the goal is to make a memory. Often, you let time slip away because your memory is consuming you.
You are charged to make new memories everyday. Each day, you should be making a new memory that counts, a memory that brings a smile to your face and to the countenance of others. Your goal should be to create many memories so that when you look back, the good outweighs the bad. Your life should be a peppered balance of memories, where those black spots are few within your salt mixture.
Learn...teach yourself to remember well, meaning don't dwell in pain. Your mind has a choice. Remember the good of a person or don't think of them at all if they have been a source of deep hurt. Remember the good about a loss one and don't dwell on their painful exit. Remember always the good because it will position you to make good memories here and now...like today.

Emotional Me...Emotional You

In the quagmire of emotions, I often found myself trying to find the balance that is considered right and acceptable. The dos and don’ts always floated in my head.

Get Dressed...Feel Pretty!

Some friends and I talked about how important it is for a woman to dress up. It makes her feel pretty. It's not about vanity.
It is easy to become careless with self as a person gets older. One of the things my mother drilled into us is that you need to dress appropriately and for the occasion. Although we don't follow it to the T, my siblings and I still take great care how we represent our family and that includes how we dress.
We know that our mom would be embarrassed if we looked constantly sloppy or walked into church or dinner disheveled. A lot of our friends look at us and say, you haven't aged. We actually have, of course, but we take good care of how we look. Again, it has nothing to do with vanity. It is loving oneself enough to invest the time.
We not only represent our family but we also understand that we are the reflection of God and represent His family. We understood that when we dressed up for a Sunday service, we honored God. I guess that impression stayed with all of us and we took it beyond church.
Do we wear jeans, sweats and forgo makeup. Heck yea! However dress up is not limited to clothes. It is smelling nice or pretty, making sure your hair is cared for, not being afraid to try new colors, throwing on some polish, shaving! You know the basic care to remain attractive for your significant other. That stuff is important but you see people let themselves go, and they don't realize that the lack of care impacts their self-esteem because eventually they don't feel good about themselves. It tells their partner, I don't think you're important enough to keep the attraction, and it tells God, I don't care to be a reflection of your family or a reflection of you for that matter.
Get Dressed today. Have fun and feel pretty or handsome. Each Sunday we take a selfie in church during service with the person we sit with. So if you dress up today after reading this, go ahead and take a selfie and represent proudly.

(Inspired by my book - Get Dressed! Life has stripped you...NOW WHAT?)
